All Sundays are included in the list of public holidays.During those days there are no transactions.

Which are the statutory and the customary holidays?

Some of these holidays are statutory (compulsory by law), while others are customary. The main difference between the two types of holidays is that working during statutory holidays is prohibited, while on customary holidays working is optional and it depends on the employer.

Statutory holidays

  • Easter Monday
  • May 1, Labour Day
  • August 15, Assumption of Virgin Mary
  • October 28 (national holiday)
  • December 25, Christmas
Customary Holidays
  • January 1, New Year’s Day
  • January 6, Epiphany
  • Clean Monday
  • December 26, Second Day of Christmas
  • Celebration day of the patron saint of the town
  • Liberation day of the town
Further holidays can be determined, up to 5 per year, upon the decision of the Ministry of Labour.

Holidays in the field of Education

  • November 17: Athens Polytechnic Uprising
  • December 24 - January 7: Christmas Eve – St. John’s Day
  • January 30: Three Holy Hierarchs
  • Holy Monday – Sunday of Thomas
  • Holy Spirit Monday (every 1st Monday of June every year)
  • Celebration of the patron saint of the town where the school is located
  • (July 1) – September 11: Summer holidays (Schools open on September 1 for resit examinations)
