School attendance is compulsory for the first 10 years of school, provided that the child is at the appropriate age. Attendance of one year in kindergarten, six years in primary school (Dimotiko) and three years in Lower Secondary School (Gymnasium) is compulsory, while attendance of three years in Upper Secondary School (Lyceum) is optional. Please find below the structure of the country’s educational system in detail.
a) Child Care Centers and Nursery schools
Children under 4 years old can go to kindergartens or nursery schools which operate in every municipality of the country. They are open from 7:00 until 16:00 and they offer children breakfast and lunch. The children are entitled to go to a municipal child care center depending on the income criteria of their parents (or guardians). The supervision of the Child Care and Nursery Schools belongs to the 1st degree Local Administration, namely the Municipalities .1 .
b) The pre-school education in Greece starts at the age of 4 and the children may be eligible for enrollment in kindergartens. Attendance is compulsory for the children who are over five years old.
Free access for children to any level of education depending on their age is an obligation of the Greek Sate. However, the available places in the Child Care Centers of big cities are limited. Thus, certain criteria have been imposed on the children’s enrollment depending on:
Note:The exclusion of immigrant-origin children from the nursery schools in the country’s Municipalities is considered discriminatory and you can report it to the competent services. You will find a detailed list of legal advisory services at the end of the guide you hold in your hands.
The stage that follows the preschool education is the six years of compulsory attendance at Primary School - Dimotiko, which belongs to primary education.
a) Lower Secondary School - Gymnasium:
The three-year attendance in Gymnasium is the last period of compulsory education and is a prerequisite for registration and attendance at General and Vocational Lyceums. Evening Gymnasiums operate in parallel with the Day ones, at which the attendance starts at the age of 14.
b) Upper Secondary School - Lyceum:
The second level of secondary education is not compulsory, lasts three years and includes two branches:
The students are enrolled in both General and Vocational Lyceums at the age of 15. Evening General Lyceums and Evening Vocational Lyceums operate in parallel with the Day ones, while the minimum age for enrollment in the Evening Vocational Lyceums is 16 years.
Higher education is the last level of the formal educational system and includes the University and Technological Sector. The University sector includes the Universities, Technical Universities and the School of Fine Arts, while the Technological sector includes the Technological Educational Institutes (Τ.Ε.Ι.) and the Higher School of Pedagogical & Technological Education (ASPETE).
Students may enter the Universities, Technical Universities and Technological Educational Institutes (Τ.Ε.Ι.) through the Entrance Examinations system, while the Schools of Fine Arts and ASPETE have their own entrance examinations system.

Along with the operation of Intercultural Schools there are new programs in the classes of typical school aiming at a smoother and more equal integration of foreign and remigrant students, as well as students that are not native Greek and cannot meet the language requirements of the class corresponding to their age.
These are two Reception Classes (Ι and ΙΙ) and one Tutorial Class.
These classes are available in schools that are integrated into the so-called ZEP (Zones of Educational Priority) 2, which were established in 2010 in areas where the following have been observed:
Specifically :
1. In Reception Class Ι :
The following are required in order for a student to join a Reception Class:
3. Tutorial Classes
A decision by the teacher’s association, following a recommendation by the Director of the school unit, is required for the operation of the Tutorial Classes.
The decision of the teachers’ association includes:
The overall objectives of ZEP schools are:
The operation of these programs is subject to the principles of intercultural education. Their main tool is the acknowledgment, the development of respect and the acceptance of the linguistic and cultural diversity of students and taking advantage of this diversity for the benefit of the entire educational process.
The main objectives of these programs are:
Β) Intercultural Schools, Reception Classes and Remedial Tutorial Classes
Apart from the general structure of Greek educational system, some municipalities, according to the needs of the immigrant population, operate Schools of Intercultural Education which meet the educational needs of children who are not native Greek and/or come from different cultural backgrounds. The basic principles of Intercultural Education are:
Yes! The children that come to Greece at a young age can learn the Greek language at school and through social interaction by living for some years in Greece. But what about older citizens of third countries who want to learn Greek?
Learning the Greek language is useful for the everyday life of any permanent resident in Greece. The certification through examinations of adequate knowledge of the Greek language (comprehension and production), both in writing and orally, is a prerequisite for the citizens of third countries to obtain long-term resident status. What is more, for the granting of citizenship through naturalization an emphasis is placed on the adequate knowledge (oral and written) of the language, as you may read in the relevant section of this guide.
The most systematic and extensive program throughout Greece of free courses for learning Greek as a foreign language is organized by the Youth and Lifelong Learning Foundation (IVEDIVIM) and is called “ODYSSEUS” project. It is addressed to citizens of the European Union (EU) and third-country nationals irrespective of their origin, from the age of 16 and over, without any discrimination, who reside legally in Greece. Apart from learning the Greek as a second (or foreign) language, the Greek history as well as aspects of Greek culture are taught in “Odysseus” project. The aim is the student/s to acquire language skills and practices, social and intercultural skills in order for them to understand the Greek society and be integrated, both they and their families, actively in that. The completion of the planned course of study provides the students with the opportunity to participate in the Examination for the Certificate of Attainment in Greek at level A2, General Secretariat for Lifelong Learning.

One of the central bodies certifying the level of attainment in Greek is the Modern Greek Language Teaching Centre of The National and Kapodistrian University of Athens. The Teaching Centre provides courses of learning Greek as a foreign language and aspects of Greek culture. Students are required to pay tuition fees to attend the courses. It is the largest and oldest Greek Teaching Centre in the world. Many of its graduates are today teachers of Modern Greek and Philology at Universities throughout the world, members of the diplomatic corps in their own countries, church leaders, renowned scientists, company managers, respected artists and business professionals.
The Teaching Centre operates under the auspices of the Interdepartmental Program for the Teaching of Modern Greek as a second/foreign language along with the similarly titled Master's Degree Program of the Department of Philology and the Department of Philosophy, Pedagogy and Psychology.
The objectives of the Teaching Centre are:
A department of teaching Greek Language as a foreign language operates in Thessaloniki since 2015 which offers distance learning courses via the internet.

Yes! – The Second Chance Schools operate for this purpose
The Second Chance School is a public Adult Education School. It is addressed to citizens over 18 years old, who have not completed the compulsory secondary education.
The total duration of the program is 18 months, namely 2 school years (from September to June). Following the successful attendance, an equivalent degree to that of Gymnasium is granted.
The curriculum differs from that of the formal education in terms of content, teaching methodology and assessment of the students. The weekly schedule consists of 25 hours and the classes are held in the afternoon (except schools operating in prisons were the courses are offered in the morning), from Monday to Friday. The courses that are taught are:
Particular emphasis is placed on the acquisition of basic skills and the development of personal skills. The acquisition of general knowledge, the use of new technologies, the learning of a foreign language and the counselling in professional orientation significantly improve the access to the labour market.
58 Second Chance Schools operate throughout Greece, 7 of which meet the educational needs of inmates in the country’s prisons. You may find a detailed list of the Second Chance Schools as well as other information about the program on the website http://www.inedivim.gr/index.php/sde

Yes! Several public and private organizations are involved in the education of adult citizens in Greece, such as the Second Chance Schools which operate under the auspices of INEDIVIM. Another entity that provides education to adults is OAED3 (which organizes educational programs for the unemployed).
Public and private Vocational Training Institutes (Ι.Ε.Κ.)4, as well as private entities such as the Κ.Ε.Κ. (Vocational Training Centres) and the Κ.Ε.Ε. (Adult Education Centres5) are also active in the areas of education and adult training. These centers often undertake educational programs targeting vulnerable or socially excluded groups such as the unemployed or immigrants. The programs of ΚΕΕ and ΚΕΚ are funded by various bodies that promote the education and employment relationship, or promote integration policies and do not require tuition fees.
In addition, several programs offered are subsidized under policies relating to the connection between education and work. In these programs, once the trainees have finished their training cycle, they are placed as apprentices on jobs similar to the content of their courses. This type of education with “training vouchers” is subsidized and the trainees are paid for their participation, but the remuneration package is quite lower than that they would get if they worked normally in the same company.
You may find a complete list of the Κ.Ε.Κ. operating in the country on the website https://www.voucher.gov.gr/kek/index/pid/1 where you can search for the ΚΕΚ/ΚΕΕ of vocational training based on where you reside.
DOATAP (Hellenic National Academic Recognition Information Centre – NARIC) is the organization responsible for the recognition of degrees (undergraduate, postgraduate and doctoral) from countries other than Greece6. You may find useful information on the organization's website (http://www.doatap.gr/) where you can see the educational institutions recognized in Greece, download the applications for the recognition and equivalency of the degree and grades awarded, find the lists with the necessary documents and the fees to be paid for the relevant procedure. Due to the fact that the university or technological degrees are examined individually (especially the unrecognized ones), you should visit the organization’s website or offices to get informed about your case.
